GHANAsoccernet.com assesses the chances of FIVE players who could be lucky enough to make Ghana's squad for the 2014 World Cup ahead of the official announcement by coach Kwesi Appiah.

David Accam

Purely on current form, the 23-year-old perhaps deserves a place in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup following his explosive start to the season at Swedish club Helsingborg.

The Right to Dream Academy graduate has hit five goals from eight games in the league and has been vital for the side’s progress to the Cup finals where Elfsborg awaits.

Accam’s relative inexperience with the Ghana team having been invited once but yet to make his debut however hurts his chances.

He is also competing with crack players for limited positions in attack.

Could have easily made the squad but for the position he plays in, midfield – Ghana’s strongest area.

Having to come up against sure bets Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Kwadwo Asamoah and Rabiu Mohammed is asking a lot of the 22-year-old who has impressed on loan at Italian club Parma.

Some has considered him the answer to Ghana’s problematic left-back slot but is he really the ‘Messiah’?

Once a striker now converted into a left-back, Schlupp’s pace and power has been key for Leicester City in their promotion to the English top flight as winners of thw Championship.

Perhaps his star has come too late in the day but don’t be too surprised to find him in the squad especially after catching the eye of the Black Stars technical team to merit a direct monitoring.

He has all the physical attributes to be a good goalkeeper for Ghana. His debut for the Black Stars against Turkey is highly memorable after providing an assist off a quick release with his hands across 40 yards for Asamoah Gyan to score.

His subsequent games for Ghana weren’t that convincing but still in with a chance of making the squad but will be considered one of the lucky ones.

Unlike four years ago where there was a wholesale of players promoted from the victorious 2009 U20 squad, the recent crop has found it extremely difficult to break into the Black Stars squad this time around.

The 20-year-old has however started scoring for Sion in the Swiss League and therefore could profit from the emergence of his good form.
