2014 World Cup: Can Ghana upset favourites Germany in Brazil?
Ghana and Germany will clash at the World Cup in Brazil next month

Soccer Laduma writer David Kappel asks whether Ghana's Black Stars have got the capacity to dismantle the German machine and win at the 2014 World Cup clash between the two sides in the Group G clash.

Date: 21 June

Time: 21:00 (Ghana time)

Stadium: Estadio Castelao

Group: G

Ghana and Germany also met in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with the Europeans winning a tight match 1-0 through Mesut Ozil's cracker.

Despite Ghana’s loss, the two sides qualified for the knockout stages. Ghana were eliminated by Uruguay in the quarter-final and Germany finished third.

Both sides have only ever met twice apart from this game. In 1993 Germany beat Ghana 6-1 and in 1971 West Germany and Ghana draw 1-1.

The game will also be the duel of two brothers, with Kevin-Prince Boateng playing for Ghana and Jerome Boateng playing for Germany.

The West Africans had an impressive World Cup qualification campaign, finishing their group on top with 15 out of a possible 18 points – the most of any African team.

In their qualification playoff they thrashed Egypt 6-1 in the first leg and could even afford to lose 2-1 in the return game.

Germany, meanwhile, also had an impressive qualification campaign, winning nine out of their ten games and drawing one.

In 2010, Ghana’s physical style of play frustrated the Germans and their players will have matured since four years ago.

It will be the side's second game in Group G and with Portugal as well as the USA also fighting for progress, neither Germany nor Ghana can effort to give points away.

Make sure to mark this game in your calendar and let’s see if our West African brothers can upset one of the tournament’s favoured teams.
