Ex Ghana striker Augustine Arhinful has rejected claims that the Black Stars is over reliant on captain Asamoah Gyan with barely a month to the 2014 World Cup.

The Al Ain star will be leading the Black Stars to its third successive appearance at the finals this term in Brazil.

Gyan emerged Ghana’s leading scorer during the flamboyant qualifying campaign which was capped with a 7-1 rout of Egypt in the playoffs.

The 28-year-old is the most reliable source of goals for the Black Stars in their two previous campaigns at the World Cup - in particular four years ago in South Africa.

Gyan is once more again expected even more than ever to carry the team on his shoulders in the upcoming finals in Brazil.

Many however claim Kwesi Appiah’s team is heavily dependent on the ex Sunderland hitman who has the knack of committing occasional severe blunders in front of goal.

But ex Black Stars striker Augustine Arhinful believes this thought is being overrated by many Ghanaians especially with the emergence of a supporting cast in Abdul Majeed Waris.

"You first have to play from the defence, through midfield before you get into attack," he told Radio Gold.

"So if someone is scoring a lot of goals it doesn't mean he is being overly depended on.

"It might be as a result of the good performance from the entire team.

"Asamoah Gyan is a top player, no doubt about that but the fact that he scores most of our goals doesn't mean he is being heavily depended on.

"Nowadays he doesn't even play as the leading striker but behind Abdul Majeed Waris who has also been doing well.

"Maybe Asamoah Gyan has scored these many goals for Ghana because others didn't get as many opportunities with the Black Stars as he has."

Gyan is now just a goal behind to equalling the all-time leading scorer record for the Black Stars jointly held by Edward Acquah and Kwesi Owusu.
