Asamoah Gyan’s camp is furious with recent statements attributed to ex Ghana striker Augustine Arhinful 'seeking to downplay the effect of the Black Stars captain'.

Gyan’s performance for Al Ain this season has simply been phenomenal and is expected to translate the same or even better form to help the Black Stars at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The 28-year-old has scored 36 goals in all competitions for Al Ain this season with some games still left to be played before he joins the Black Stars camp for the World Cup.

Arhinful however in a recent interview with Accra-based Radio Gold said the Black Stars is not ‘over reliant’ on the ex Sunderland man despite emerging the leading scorer in the World Cup qualification series in Africa.

The ex Ghana striker’s comments has not been taken lightly by the camp of Asamoah Gyan.

“We have observed a worrying trend, I would say a calculated attempt by Augustine Arhinful to always try to discredit Asamoah Gyan,” the Chief Executive Officer of the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, Samuel Anim Addo told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“He [Arhinful] never misses the opportunity to say negative things about the Black Stars captain when at this time all they need is encouragement.

“No one needs to be told the immense impact Asamoah [Gyan] has had on this Black Stars team and we are even hoping he does even more to ensure Ghana’s dream at the upcoming World Cup is realized.

“But then all he [Arhinful] does is to always downplay Asamoah’s efforts for the team. What will he then tell him when he comes to the camp to socialize with the players?

“These kind of things are not needed especially at this time when we want to give our team the best of preparations for the World Cup.”
