Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan will be handed the Arabian Gulf League’s top scorer’s award for the third time running after his closest contender Sebastian Tagliabue failed to make up the 29-goal tally.

The Black Stars captain watched in anxiety as Tagliabue attempted to steal his individual accolade on the final day of the season by scoring a brace in Al Wahda’s 3-1 win at the already relegated Al Shaab on Sunday.

Gyan had bagged 29 goals– two less than his last season tally of 31 – despite playing in every single game for the Boss this term.

His goals and retention of the top scorer award for the third time on the bounce is the only silver lining in Al Ain’s disappointing season which saw them dethroned as champions of the UAE.

Gyan contributed more than half the entire goals scored by the Dubai-based club this season.

The 28-year-old has been the star man for the Boss since his arrival from Sunderland in 2011 initially on loan.

Al Ain’s technical instability this season, with frequent changes of the head coach ultimately cost the side the title this season.

They could only finish sixth but are crucially still in the Asian Champions League where they are most likely to progress to the quarter final stage.
