The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations has produced a very low goal count after all the  16 teams in the competition in South Africa played their first group matches.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations has produced a very low goal count after all the  16 teams in the competition in South Africa played their first group matches.

After the opening eight game in all four groups, only 13 goals have been scored between the 16 participating teams.

And that is an average of 1.63 a game – the lowest number since there were five goals in the opening eight games in 2002 with an average of 0.63 goals a game.

The highest recent figure was the 26 goals scored in the opening eight games of the 2008 competition in Ghana.
