2013 AFCON LOC chief Nonkonyana brands Essien as egotistical

South Africa 2013 Local Organising Committee chairman Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana has questioned the commitment of Ghana star Michael Essien and branded him as selfish.

The Real Madrid star, who turned 30 on Monday, has asked to be excused by Ghana for playing at the Nations Cup to fitness concerns.

The Chelsea loanee's decision has angered the LOC chairman who has branded him as selfish.

"That is selfishness in my view; it is very egotistical. It is time to instil in every player national pride." Nonkonyana told The Echo

"It cannot be right for any player produced [in Africa] to say I prefer my club.

"'It is time now for players to be proud of their own nations. The gentlemen we are talking about, they are megastars now as a direct result of the contribution of their national associations,'"
